Chinese AI Models Capture Over 50% of Global Coding Market
Chinese AI companies have captured over half of the global coding model market, prompting U.S. export controls and congressional investigations.
Chinese artificial intelligence models from companies including DeepSeek, Z.ai, and Alibaba Group have seen a substantial surge in global adoption throughout 2026. Usage shares for these models rose from low double digits in early 2026 to over 50% by September, with a particular concentration in coding tasks. Data from developer platforms OpenRouter, Inc. and Vercel indicate that Chinese models accounted for 55% of usage in August and between 57% and 67% of tokens used during the week of September 14.
This growth is driven by performance gains and increased cost-effectiveness, leading to significant uptake among businesses in the Global South. The Federal government of the United States has responded by implementing export controls to restrict Chinese access to advanced chips.
Two U.S. House Committees are currently investigating the impact of this adoption. Washington officials expressed concern that the integration of Chinese AI could create a technology sphere of influence that leads to geopolitical alignment against the United States.
