Russia Deploys Rassvet Satellite Network to Control Drones
Russia is accelerating the deployment of its Rassvet satellite network to enable real-time drone control and eliminate reliance on foreign communications technology.
The Federal Government of Russia is rapidly deploying Rassvet, a low-orbit satellite internet system designed as a domestic alternative to SpaceX's Starlink. Developed by Bureau 1440, the network has launched approximately 40 satellites since March and incorporates laser links and satellite-based 5G technology. Moscow aims to have 292 satellites operational by 2027 and 924 by 2035.
Ukrainian intelligence officials, including Major General Vadim Skibitsky and adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, warn that the system is progressing faster than expected. They report that Rassvet already possesses limited operational capability, providing intermittent connections over Ukraine. Officials caution that a fully operational network will allow Russia to control strike drones across Ukraine and Europe in real time while potentially disrupting Ukrainian battlefield communications.
The deployment follows efforts by SpaceX and Ukraine to block unauthorized Russian access to Starlink terminals on February 5. By establishing Rassvet, Russia intends to eliminate its reliance on illicit supply networks and foreign technology. In response, Ukraine has increased pressure on Elon Musk to allow Starlink signals for drones operating over Russian territory, a request that has been denied. Kyiv is currently evaluating countermeasures to mitigate the impact of the Russian network.
