Berkshire Hathaway Faces Losses on AI Investment Push
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel faces investor scrutiny after multibillion-dollar AI bets in Alphabet and Bending Spoons struggle to yield returns.
Greg Abel, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has shifted the conglomerate's investment strategy away from the cautious technology approach previously held by Warren Buffett. As part of a multibillion-dollar push into artificial intelligence, Abel committed $10 billion to Alphabet Inc. and $930 million to the Italian technology group Bending Spoons.
These initial bets have struggled, with Alphabet shares falling more than 24% since June and dropping below the price at which Berkshire purchased them. Despite these early losses, the company maintains a massive liquidity cushion, reporting $365.5 billion in cash at the end of the second quarter.
Investors are now awaiting third-quarter earnings to evaluate Abel's leadership. Market focus remains on the performance of Geico and BNSF, as well as the company's approach to share buybacks while stock prices remain at record highs.
