Greta Thunberg Joins French Student Protests Over School Funding
Greta Thunberg joined thousands of French students protesting dilapidated schools and social injustice, resulting in over 6,800 arrests nationwide.
Climate activist Greta Thunberg joined hundreds of high-school students on Tuesday at the Paul Éluard lycée in Saint-Denis to protest dilapidated school buildings and rat infestations. The demonstrations were part of a larger nationwide movement that the French Interior Ministry reported drew 161,500 participants, including 41,500 in Paris.
The unrest led to more than 6,800 arrests and one severe injury involving a 15-year-old who lost a hand. In response to the violence, the interior minister suspended the use of one specific type of police stun grenade. Reports indicate that the riots have since spread to Belgium.
Thunberg linked the poor state of educational facilities to broader systemic failures. She stated that the lack of school funding, the climate crisis, and social injustice mean that the future of the youth is being robbed from them.
