OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Advertising in India

OpenAI has introduced advertising for ChatGPT users in India, targeting free accounts with a new intent-based ad model and self-serve tools for businesses.

OpenAI has launched advertising on ChatGPT in India, targeting logged-in adult users on Free and Go plans. Paid subscriptions, including Plus and Pro, will remain ad-free. More than 50 brands are expected to begin advertising this week, supported by agency partners WPP and Omnicom.

Starting September 4, the company will introduce a self-serve ads manager for businesses with daily budgets beginning at Rs 725. This tool is designed to attract small and medium-sized enterprises alongside large corporations, with expected interest from the travel, retail, financial services, and health and beauty sectors.

OpenAI intends to differentiate its advertising model from traditional search ads by basing relevance on the immediate intent expressed during user conversations rather than keyword bidding or long-term profiles.
