Senate Democrats Demand Apology After Failed Jack Smith Interrogation
Senate Democrats are demanding an apology from Chair Chuck Grassley after Senator Eric Schmitt falsely accused former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury during a hearing.
Senate Democrats, led by Ranking Member Dick Durbin, demanded an apology on Wednesday from Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley following a failed attempt by Senator Eric Schmitt to implicate former special counsel Jack Smith in a conspiracy.
During a hearing, Eric Schmitt falsely claimed Smith visited Atlanta in February 2024 to coordinate with a local prosecutor in a case against Donald Trump. Records later revealed Smith was actually in Maryland attending a basketball game. Schmitt described the incident as a misunderstanding, noting he believed Smith was at an NBA game.
Democrats allege that Republicans violated Senate rules by withholding committee records and falsely accused Smith of perjury based on a misunderstanding of those documents. Smith has previously defended his investigations as non-partisan and dropped his case against Trump before the president's inauguration in accordance with Justice Department policy.
