Airbnb Plans AI Agent to Counter Travel Industry Disruption
Airbnb plans to launch its own AI agent next year to protect its business model from AI-driven search tools like Meta's Muse.
The emergence of AI agents, including Meta Platforms' Muse, is disrupting online travel agencies by simplifying search and reducing reliance on traditional booking platforms. While Booking Holdings Inc. and Expedia face significant exposure due to their reliance on non-exclusive hotel inventory and sponsored listings, Airbnb is better positioned because more than half of its listings are exclusive to its platform.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky argues that AI chatbots currently drive traffic to the company's site, asserting that travelers prefer the browsing experience over text-based planning. He noted that "Chatbots might work for buying paper towels, but people enjoy planning trips."
To maintain its valuation and pricing power, Airbnb plans to launch its own AI agent next year. The company may also develop a formal loyalty program to prevent repeat customers from migrating to third-party AI agents. Analysts suggest Airbnb could eventually use its unique inventory to negotiate favorable terms with AI agent developers.
