Unidentified Tanker Struck by Projectiles Near Qatar
An unidentified tanker was hit by two projectiles north of Qatar amid escalating maritime tensions and an ongoing war between the United States and Iran.
An unidentified tanker was struck by two projectiles approximately 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, on November 4. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported the incident on Thursday, though the status of the crew, the extent of the damage, and any environmental impact remain unconfirmed.
No party has claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident follows a report from the Qatari shipping company Nakilat that its LNG carrier, Al Mayeda, was hit by unidentified objects in the Gulf on October 30, an event that resulted in no injuries.
These attacks occur during an ongoing war between the United States and Iran that began in February. While the Government of Qatar is currently mediating between the two nations, Iranian state television reported on Thursday that two tankers and a towboat caught fire after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have seized two U.S. drones in the same area.
