S&P/ASX200 Falls as Financials Lead Market Decline
The S&P/ASX200 dropped 0.84 per cent on October 14 as financial stocks tumbled following a soft session on Wall Street.
The S&P/ASX200 fell 75.3 points, or 0.84 per cent, to 8709.9 by midday on October 14. The decline tracked a soft session on Wall Street, with the financials sector tumbling nearly two per cent after sell-offs of Citigroup and Goldman Sachs in the United States.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia led the domestic banking decline. CEO Matt Comyn described the current economic climate as a "demanding environment," noting that growth is slowing and inflation remains too high.
Market performance was mixed across other sectors. Energy stocks including Woodside and Santos rose on the back of higher oil prices. Conversely, uranium stocks fell, highlighted by an eight per cent drop in Paladin Energy following production issues at its mine in Namibia.
In other corporate developments, Glencore made its debut listing on the Australian Securities Exchange. Meanwhile, Regis Resources entered a trading halt following a Federal Court decision regarding the McPhillamys Gold Project.
