Russia Withdraws Ambassador to UK Over Ukraine Drone Support

The Government of Russia withdrew its ambassador to the United Kingdom following reports that British-made drones were used by Ukraine to strike Russian targets.

The Government of Russia withdrew its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, who left his post on July 21 after seven years of service. The Kremlin has not named a successor, leaving the embassy under the leadership of chargé d’affaires Vasily A Tsyganov.

This diplomatic downgrade follows a deterioration in bilateral relations triggered by reports that Ukraine used British-made attack drones to strike targets inside Russia. The Russian embassy accused the UK government of choosing a "path of confrontation" and warned that London's actions would "inevitably carry consequences."

In response to the Russian threats, Andy Burnham affirmed that he would continue to support Ukraine "100 per cent." While vacancies in ambassadorial posts occur, the move is viewed as a deliberate signal to downgrade diplomatic ties between the two nations.
