Barclays Offers Early Motor Finance Payouts Under FCA Rules

Barclays has begun offering early settlements to motor finance consumers following the Financial Conduct Authority's introduction of minimum expectations for lender payouts.

Barclays has started offering early payouts to motor finance consumers, utilizing the redress scheme methodology established by the Financial Conduct Authority. These optional payments allow consumers to receive funds before a final legal resolution, though accepting a settlement requires customers to waive their right to seek further compensation. The bank has allocated 430 million pounds for these payouts through its Barclays Partner Finance arm.

The Financial Conduct Authority introduced minimum expectations for lenders wishing to settle early to ensure customers receive no less than they would under the official scheme. The regulator will now publish the names of lenders making such offers. This development occurs as the regulator prepares to defend its 9.1 billion pound redress scheme against legal challenges from industry players, including Volkswagen Financial Services, Mercedes-Benz, and Crédit Agricole Auto Finance.

While some lenders are pursuing legal action, others have taken different paths. Lloyds Bank set aside 2 billion pounds for payouts but opted not to challenge the scheme. The legal battle involving the challenging lenders is scheduled to proceed to the Upper Tribunal in February 2027.
