Postmedia Closes North Bay Plant and Cuts Daily Print
Postmedia Network Inc. is closing its North Bay printing operation and replacing several daily print newspapers with a regional weekly and digital platforms.
Postmedia Network Inc. is restructuring its journalism delivery across Northern Ontario, resulting in the closure of its printing operation in North Bay and the end of several standalone daily print products. The closure of the North Bay plant will eliminate 11 jobs in printing and distribution.
Effective October 31, the standalone print editions of The Daily Press in Timmins, The Nugget in North Bay, and The Sudbury Star in Sudbury will cease publication. To replace these daily papers, the company will launch a new weekly mailed publication called Northern News This Week during the week of November 2. This regional paper will aggregate reporting from Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Kirkland Lake, Elliot Lake, and Espanola.
Simultaneously, Postmedia is transitioning these titles to new digital platforms at timminspress.com, nugget.ca, and thesudburystar.com. Steve Serviss, Vice President of News for Medium and Regional Markets, stated that newsroom jobs in North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, and across Northern Ontario are not affected by these operational changes.
