UK Introduces Energy Independence Bill to Curb Mis-selling

The UK government introduced the Energy Independence Bill to penalize rogue energy brokers and ban new onshore fracking licenses in England.

The Government of the United Kingdom introduced the Energy Independence Bill to combat the mis-selling of energy contracts by suppliers and brokers. The legislation grants Ofgem new authority to impose fines, mandate compensation, and ban operators that push households and businesses into overpriced contracts. The bill specifically targets hidden commissions and allows the watchdog to curtail executive bonuses for leaders who reward themselves while customers suffer, a measure expected to save businesses over £100 million annually.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that energy bosses should not receive bumper bonuses when they fail their customers, noting that people work hard for their money and should not be ripped off by energy companies.

Beyond consumer protection, the bill establishes a moratorium on new onshore fracking licenses in England. Minister for Climate Transition Katie White said the move protects communities from the risks of earthquakes and unsafe drilling. The legislation also empowers local authorities to fine landlords up to £30,000 for failing to meet energy efficiency standards.

These measures arrive as the government maintains a goal of clean power by 2030, despite budget cuts to the energy department and a veto on offshore wind projects that do not lower consumer bills.
