FBI Dismantles $250 Million Minnesota Daycare Fraud Network

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the dismantling of a massive fraud network in Minnesota as Governor Tim Walz and journalist Nick Shirley clash over the scandal.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the bureau has dismantled a $250 million fraud network linked to the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, resulting in 78 indictments and 57 convictions. Patel described the findings as the tip of a large iceberg and surged federal personnel and resources to Minnesota to target schemes exploiting federal programs. The investigation followed reports from journalist Nick Shirley, whose viral footage of the vacant Quality Learning Center in Minneapolis alleged the facility pocketed $4 million in taxpayer funds. Shirley claimed his research uncovered over $110 million in fraud in a single day, with some estimates suggesting totals could reach $9 billion.

Governor Tim Walz defended his administration's oversight, stating he has strengthened audits and supported criminal prosecutions. However, the situation devolved into a political conflict when Walz characterized Shirley's reports as an effort to scapegoat and an expression of white supremacy. Shirley responded by calling these accusations a deflection tactic and alleged that Walz enables fraud to maintain political support within the Somali community. The fraud case involves 92 defendants, 82 of whom are Somali Americans.

The scandal drew national attention on X, where Elon Musk described similar childcare grant irregularities in Washington state as fraud-maxxing. Senator Ted Cruz leveraged the momentum to call for a full audit of New York City's Medicaid spending. Additionally, President Donald Trump criticized Walz for the crisis and announced the revocation of temporary protected status for approximately 700 Somali nationals to facilitate their deportation.
