Kolkata Police File FIR Against Mamata Banerjee Over Rally

Kolkata Police registered a suo motu FIR against Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and Trinamool Congress chief, following a foundation day rally held by the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad on August 28, 2026. The case, filed at Hastings Police Station, alleges that the event on Cathedral Road violated specific conditions mandated by the Calcutta High Court.

Authorities claim the rally failed to keep one traffic lane open and continued past the court-specified 3 p.m. deadline. The FIR further accuses Banerjee of criminal conspiracy to incite supporters, who allegedly threw barricades and engaged in scuffles with security personnel. During the event, Banerjee criticized the current administration, describing the police as a "monstrous entity" and alleging that the Election Commission was manipulating electoral rolls to remove voters.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to register the case and inform the Calcutta High Court of the violations. Adhikari stated that the matter would not be taken easily, while Banerjee has opposed the actions, citing police atrocities against her supporters.
