Negri Sembilan Sets State Election Date for August 1

Negri Sembilan will hold state elections on August 1, 2026, to determine the composition of its 36-seat assembly. The polls center on a confrontation between Pakatan Harapan, which is contesting all 36 seats, and an informal electoral pact consisting of Barisan Nasional and factions of Perikatan Nasional, including PAS, Wawasan, Gerakan, and MIPP.

Barisan Nasional is contesting 25 seats under this pact, while the Perikatan Nasional factions are contesting 11. Meanwhile, Bersatu is running independently in 24 seats. This election serves as a critical litmus test for a new political strategy in which PAS transfers grassroots support to Umno candidates to challenge the federal unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

A victory for the informal pact could empower Umno to exert more influence at the federal level, potentially destabilizing the ruling coalition's parliamentary majority. Such an outcome may also create a crisis of legitimacy for the Democratic Action Party regarding its non-Malay support base, following the party's recent withdrawal from the Umno-led state government in Melaka.
