Enugu State Government Suspends Traditional Ruler Williams Ezugwu

The Government of Enugu State suspended Williams Ezugwu, the traditional ruler of the Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community, effective September 24, 2026. Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs Charles Egumgbe stated the suspension followed flagrant violations of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State.

Officials alleged that Ezugwu managed the community single-handedly by refusing to establish a town union executive or a cabinet and failing to subscribe to the community's code of conduct. The government further accused the monarch of harassing, intimidating, and arresting his subjects, warning that such behavior could lead to a community crisis.

Following the announcement, claims circulated on social media that the suspension was political retaliation because Ezugwu hosted Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi two weeks earlier. Commissioner Egumgbe dismissed these claims as mischievous, asserting the move was purely administrative. He noted that the state had issued a similar warning letter to another traditional ruler in the Mmaku community for misconduct.
