New Zealand-India FTA Boosts Exports Before Official Entry

Trade Minister Todd McClay announced that New Zealand exports to India are rising ahead of the free trade agreement's official implementation later this year.

Trade Minister Todd McClay announced that the signed New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement is driving an increase in export volumes even before it officially enters into force later this year. Once active, the agreement will make 57 percent of New Zealand exports to India tariff-free immediately.

The apple sector has seen a 63 percent volume increase to 45,000 tonnes in the 2024 season, while the kiwifruit industry expects $125 million in tariff savings over five years. Other sectors experiencing growth include forestry and wool. In tourism, New Zealand recorded approximately 8,000 Indian visitors in April 2026.

To support these economic links, Air New Zealand is developing joint venture plans with Air India to launch the first direct services between the two nations. New Zealand also expects improved access for its wine and services sectors through a Most Favoured Nation clause linked to India's agreement with the European Union.
