Premier David Eby Signals Readiness for Snap Provincial Election

Premier David Eby has instructed the BC NDP and Elections BC to remain election-ready, fueling speculation of a snap provincial election two years before the scheduled October 2028 date. Eby appointed former acting chief of staff Cheryl Oates as campaign manager and cited economic disruptions from a trade war with the United States under Donald Trump as a reason for British Columbians to potentially decide the province's direction.

Elections BC has entered an increased readiness state, restocking supplies and scouting voting locations to mitigate global supply chain challenges. Eby noted the NDP currently holds a slim one-vote majority following the death of MLA Joan Phillip and the illness of two other members. This move coincides with a rebound in Eby's approval ratings, which rose from 31 percent in June to 41 percent in September, while the BC Conservatives face internal instability.

Conservative leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay has refused to resign despite the departure of nine MLAs from her caucus. Findlay characterized the prospect of a snap election as a cynical move. Meanwhile, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities urged Eby to avoid a call that would overlap with local elections running from September 19 to October 17, arguing that concurrent campaigns would distract residents from local issues across 188 communities.

Despite the polling lead, Eby faces criticism over a 13.8-billion-dollar provincial deficit and a 1.5-billion-dollar budgeting error regarding natural gas royalties.
