Tata Motors and Stellantis Expand Partnership for Global Exports
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis signed an agreement to develop vehicles in India for over 50 global markets using Tata's vehicle architectures.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV), its subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, and Stellantis signed a definitive agreement on October 12, 2026, to expand their strategic partnership into advanced vehicle technology and product development. This agreement formalizes a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026 and grants Stellantis access to Tata's product technology and vehicle architectures.
Under the deal, the companies will develop vehicles for more than 50 global markets. These vehicles will be manufactured in India at the Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited facility, a 50:50 joint venture between the two firms. The collaboration aims to leverage India's manufacturing scale and engineering strengths to establish the country as a strategic global production hub and accelerate exports.
While the official announcement did not name specific products, reports indicate the development of a midsize Jeep SUV, codenamed J1J, based on Tata Sierra’s ARGOS architecture. The J1J is expected to feature internal combustion and electric powertrains, with production planned for the Ranjangaon facility and a target launch in the first half of 2028. This arrangement allows Tata to earn licensing revenue while providing Jeep with a cost-competitive product to address declining sales volumes in India.
