The legislative assembly of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) began a three-phase election process on July 27, 2026. The first phase involved over 1.4 million registered voters across 13 constituencies in Bhimber, Mirpur, and Kotli. Subsequent phases are scheduled for August 2 in Muzaffarabad and August 10 in Poonch.
Pakistan authorities have faced severe political unrest as the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and the Awami Action Committee (AAC) called for an election boycott. Protesters are demanding the abolition of 12 assembly seats reserved for non-resident refugees and an end to economic hardships, including power shortages. In response, the Pakistani government banned the JAAC under anti-terrorism laws and deployed 14,000 police personnel from Punjab province to secure the polls. Allegations have surfaced that Field Marshal Asim Munir and the Pakistan military are manipulating the process to ensure a victory for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
India's Ministry of External Affairs characterized the unrest as a direct result of Islamabad's systemic exploitation and administrative oppression. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that any future talks with Pakistan would focus on the region, which India maintains is an integral part of its territory. Meanwhile, protest leaders have appealed for Indian assistance, citing critical shortages of rations.
