Nigerian Military Denies Secret Ceasefire With Boko Haram

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters refuted reports of a secret truce with Boko Haram, citing the neutralization of 435 terrorists in recent operations.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters denied reports that the federal government entered into a secret ceasefire agreement with Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), or other criminal groups. During a joint security press briefing in Abuja on November 5, 2026, Major-General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, dismissed claims that a truce had been in effect since June with a Boko Haram faction led by Bakura Doro.

The denial follows a September report by The New Humanitarian alleging the government paid 5 billion naira to Doro's faction to secure the release of over 300 civilians abducted from Ngoshe, Borno State. The military refuted these claims, stating that security forces are sustaining pressure on criminal elements through coordinated land, air, and maritime operations across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

To support its position, the military cited data from 588 security operations conducted in September and October. These missions resulted in the neutralization of 435 terrorists and bandits, including high-profile commanders Ali Mandara and Abba Gajiri, the arrest of 809 suspects, and the rescue of 717 kidnapped victims. Forces also recovered 5,666 pieces of weaponry and explosives.

Major-General Uba noted that while some insurgents have relocated from former strongholds due to military pressure, the Armed Forces are currently mapping these new locations to prevent the establishment of new bases. The military has also adjusted its order of battle by establishing new formations and battalions to close existing security gaps.
