BMW Recalls 13 X3 SUVs Over Steering Defect

BMW is recalling 13 X3 SUVs in the United States after a production error could cause the steering wheel to detach from the wheels.

BMW is recalling 13 X3 SUVs in the United States due to a production deviation that may cause the steering spindle to detach from the steering column. The defect affects X3 sDrive30i, X3 30 xDrive, and X3 M50 xDrive models manufactured between August 7, 2023, and February 7, 2026.

If the spindle fails, the steering wheel may rotate independently of the front wheels, resulting in a loss of steering control and an increased risk of a crash. BMW identified the issue in July 2026 after a customer outside the U.S. reported that their steering wheel could be turned with little effort. The company stated it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect and estimates that approximately 5 percent of the recalled vehicles actually possess the flaw.

Filed under National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign 26V524000, the recall includes free inspections and part replacements. BMW has advised affected drivers not to use their vehicles and to park them outside until the inspection is complete. Impacted owners will be notified on October 2, at which point dealers will begin inspecting the steering columns and spindles.
