US and UK Sanction Iranian Oil Magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani

The United States Department of the Treasury and the Government of the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on Iranian oil shipping magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani for his role in managing a multi-billion dollar shadow fleet. This network allegedly smuggles Iranian and Russian oil to evade Western sanctions using front companies and falsified documents to launder profits. The European Commission further alleges that Shamkhani utilizes Milavous Group Ltd to blend and rebrand Russian oil.

Concurrent with these sanctions, maritime monitoring service TankerTrackers.com reported on July 2, 2026, that the Comoros-flagged vessel Arista has been stranded in the Strait of Hormuz since March. This contradicts Iranian media claims that the ship recently ran aground. The vessel is linked to Shamkhani, who has reportedly amassed a $29 million property portfolio in Dubai using aliases.

These enforcement actions follow a significant escalation in regional conflict after U.S.-Israeli air strikes on February 28 killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and security official Ali Shamkhani, the father of Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani. The UK response includes an asset freeze, travel ban, and director disqualification for the magnate to curb Iranian efforts to undermine Middle East stability.
