Saskatchewan Increases Disaster Assistance Limits for Residents and Businesses
The Government of Saskatchewan expanded the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program, raising maximum payouts and shifting to a replacement-value compensation model retroactive to April 1, 2026.
The Government of Saskatchewan announced comprehensive updates to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) on July 16, 2026, in Alvena. The changes align provincial support with federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements to provide greater relief for those affected by floods, wildfires, and storms. These updates apply retroactively to April 1, 2026, allowing claims for individuals impacted by heavy rains and flooding earlier in the year.
Financial assistance limits have increased significantly: maximum support for individuals rose from $240,000 to $500,000, while the cap for small businesses increased from $500,000 to $3 million. The province also shifted its compensation model from depreciated value to standard replacement value. To encourage future resiliency, the program now allows up to 25 percent of a claim's value to be used for risk reduction projects.
Municipal changes include a new maximum deductible for larger municipalities and incentives for local governments to lower their deductibles by meeting specific emergency management criteria. While the program covers tornadoes, heavy snow, and extreme rain, it excludes drought, frost damage, and most fire-related costs. Government officials clarified that the PDAP covers essential needs in extraordinary circumstances and does not replace private insurance.
