Guatemalan Congressional Delegation Visits Taiwan to Boost Ties
Luis Alberto Contreras Colindres led a multi-party Guatemalan delegation to Taipei to discuss semiconductor cooperation and strengthen diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
President of the Guatemalan Congress Luis Alberto Contreras Colindres led a delegation of representatives from eight political parties on a five-day official visit to Taipei starting July 6, 2026. The visit, the first ever by members of the Guatemalan congress, aimed to demonstrate a broad cross-party consensus on maintaining diplomatic ties and mutual cooperation with Taiwan.
On July 7, Contreras met with President Lai Ching-te at the Presidential Office. The leaders discussed industrial development, medical care, and semiconductor cooperation, specifically focusing on the Chip Road Project. President Lai highlighted that Guatemala is Taiwan's largest sugar supplier and noted that Guatemalan exports to Taiwan have hit US$130 million for two consecutive years. Lai encouraged Taiwanese companies to use Guatemala as a strategic hub for entering wider Latin American markets.
President Lai also expressed gratitude for a May resolution passed by the Guatemalan congress supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations, including the World Health Organization and the United Nations. This visit follows a June 2025 trip by Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo to sign semiconductor agreements. Simultaneously, a seven-member delegation of Panamanian lawmakers led by Orlando Carrasquilla arrived in Taiwan for a similar five-day diplomatic visit.
