Goldman Sachs Deploys Agentic AI to Automate Software Engineering
Goldman Sachs integrated AI agents from Cognition and Anthropic to modernize legacy infrastructure and automate coding, sparking concerns over junior developer job losses.
Goldman Sachs became the first major bank to deploy agentic AI software engineers for production tasks aimed at modernizing legacy digital infrastructure and automating repetitive coding. In 2025, the firm integrated Devin, an autonomous agent developed by Cognition capable of scoping projects, writing code, and performing bug fixes.
The bank expanded its AI adoption in 2026 by implementing Anthropic's Claude for tasks involving trades, transactions, and client onboarding. CIO Marco Argenti characterized the technology as a means of augmentation that enables the bank to "3D print software," shifting performance metrics to focus on prototype speed.
While the technology is framed as a tool for augmentation, CEO David Solomon has discussed restricting headcount. These developments have raised industry concerns regarding the future of junior software engineers, with researchers predicting up to 200,000 job losses within the U.S. banking sector.
