Strong El Niño and Inflation Drive Up Australian Food Prices

The Bureau of Meteorology reports that the current El Niño event is likely to be the strongest on record since 1950, threatening lower spring rainfall across eastern and southern Australia. This weather pattern coincides with surging inflationary pressures, including rising fuel and fertilizer costs linked to conflicts in the Middle East, which are expected to drive up consumer prices for broccoli, cauliflower, peas, and leafy greens.

Agricultural output is expected to vary by region. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics forecasts a 16% to 44% drop in winter crop production for New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, while Victoria and South Australia may see increases. Drier conditions are expected to boost the supply of stone fruits, apples, and citrus.

These environmental and economic factors are impacting national inflation. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a 3.2% rise in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, identifying it as the second-largest contributor to inflation. The Reserve Bank of Australia expects these rising costs to keep inflation above its target range of 2% to 3%.
