Georgia and Virginia Suspend Lane Closures for Labor Day
Georgia and Virginia transportation departments suspended most interstate lane closures from September 4 to September 8 to reduce congestion during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
The Georgia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Transportation suspended most interstate lane closures to accommodate increased traffic for the Labor Day holiday weekend. In Georgia, the suspension runs from 12:00 p.m. Friday, September 4, through 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8. Officials expect heavy congestion in Metro Atlanta on Friday and Saturday, as well as heavy traffic in East Georgia near Savannah.
In Virginia, the suspension lasts from noon Friday, September 4, until noon Tuesday, September 8. Virginia officials advised travelers to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternative to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel while construction continues.
Both agencies encouraged motorists to use their respective 511 mobile apps for real-time traffic updates and trip planning to avoid delays during the holiday period.
