UN Report Warns Gender Equality Will Take 171 Years

The United Nations released the Gender Snapshot 2026 report, warning that gender equality will take 171 years to achieve at current rates. The report finds that not a single indicator for Sustainable Development Goal 5 is on track to be met by 2030, a stagnation attributed to a political retreat characterized by the systematic weakening of gender equality institutions.

Data shows that one in three gender equality mechanisms has seen its power eroded and one in four has faced budget cuts over the last two years, with funding dropping to its lowest level since 2021. Power remains heavily concentrated, as men lead six in seven countries and hold the majority of finance and defense portfolios. Globally, women hold only 6% of CEO positions and lead fewer than 20% of high courts.

These findings arrive during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly and the upcoming selection of the tenth UN Secretary-General, a position never held by a woman. Sima Bahous stated that societies are stronger and economies more resilient when women lead, while Li Junhua argued that current progress is the result of choices and that investing in gender equality and statistical systems is not a cost.
