Honda Develops Wireless Charging for Moving Electric Vehicles
Honda Motor developed technology to wirelessly charge electric vehicles while in motion and plans highway tests in Japan starting in 2027.
Honda Motor developed technology capable of wirelessly charging electric vehicles, including large trucks, while they are in motion. The system uses charging units embedded directly into roads to transfer electricity to vehicles, a design intended to reduce the frequency of charging stops.
The project is a collaborative effort between Honda's research arm, construction firm Taisei, and road builder Taisei Rotec. Honda plans to conduct highway tests of the system in Japan starting in the financial year beginning April 2027 or later.
While the technical capability is established, Honda engineers stated that the economic viability of the system compared to conventional high-speed charging networks still requires assessment.
