Phil Scott and Amanda Janoo Clash in Vermont Debates
Governor Phil Scott and challenger Amanda Janoo debated healthcare and economic policy on October 22 ahead of the Vermont gubernatorial election.
Incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott and Democratic-Progressive challenger Amanda Janoo participated in two televised debates on October 22 as they compete for the Vermont governorship. The candidates appeared first in a forum hosted by Vermont Public and later in a live debate hosted by NBC5 in South Burlington.
During the Vermont Public debate, the candidates clashed over healthcare and economic strategy. Janoo, an economist for the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, advocated for a universal primary and preventative care program and strategic government intervention to lower the cost of core necessities. Scott countered by citing the state's previous failed attempt to implement universal healthcare and argued that state-level efforts are insufficient, noting that demographics are working against the state.
Despite their disagreements on economic growth and the influence of outside campaign spending—including a $400,000 contribution to Scott's campaign from the Republican Lieutenant Governors Association—the candidates found common ground on the need for more housing, the implementation of term limits, and the abolition of Daylight Savings Time.
Scott is seeking a sixth two-year term, while Janoo is running for her first elected office. Recent polling remains inconsistent, with one University of New Hampshire Green Mountain poll showing Janoo leading 49-43 percent, while a September poll from Vermont Public showed Scott leading by 10 points.
