Bangladesh Urges India to Block Sheikh Hasina's Political Activity

The Government of Bangladesh requested that India prevent deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and members of banned organizations from using Indian soil to conduct political activities. Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir raised these concerns during an August 3, 2026, meeting with the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi.

The diplomatic request comes amid reports that Hasina intends to deliver a virtual speech at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5. The event would mark the second anniversary of her resignation from power. High Commissioner Trivedi stated that the matter would be considered appropriately and that India would remain vigilant.

This tension persists as Bangladesh continues to seek the extradition of Hasina. She was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity committed during student-led protests in 2024.
