Alaska Voters to Decide on Campaign Donation Limits

Alaskan voters will determine whether to reimpose campaign donation limits for state-level races during the August 18 primary election. Ballot Measure 1 would cap individual contributions at $2,000 and group donations at $4,000 per candidate per election, with inflation adjustments every ten years.

The initiative was driven by the group Citizens Against Money in Politics after a 2021 federal court ruling struck down previous limits. Governor Mike Dunleavy recently vetoed a legislative bill identical to this measure, arguing that such caps would favor wealthy candidates.

Proponents, including Representative Calvin Schrage, contend that the limits are necessary guardrails against the influence of ultra-wealthy donors and the risk of corruption. Conversely, opponents and several former Republican legislators argue that limiting contributions restricts political speech and disadvantages candidates who lack significant personal wealth or name recognition.
