Apple Shifts 20% of iPhone Production to India

Apple Inc. has expanded its Indian supply chain to include 45 companies, resulting in approximately 20% of all iPhones now being manufactured in India. This network includes larger firms such as Tata Electronics, Bharat Forge, Wipro PARI, and Hindalco, alongside over 20 micro, small, and medium enterprises. The shift has created nearly 350,000 jobs, including 120,000 direct roles.

Between 2021-22 and 2024-25, the Indian ecosystem produced iPhones valued at $45 billion, with $34 billion exported. By the end of the 2024-25 fiscal year, smartphones became India's top export, reaching over $24 billion. In May 2025 alone, suppliers manufactured iPhones worth approximately $1.68 billion. Parallel to this production growth, Apple's annual sales within India rose 13% in the last fiscal year to nearly $9 billion.

The company's strategy shifted toward non-Chinese partners following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes and the Government of India's implementation of Press Note 3 of 2020, which requires approval for foreign investment from countries sharing land borders. This transition was further supported by the government's 2020 production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes. The Ministry of Electronics and IT reported that domestic value addition for the smartphone segment reached 19% this year. By 2026, most iPhones sold in the United States are expected to be manufactured in India.
