China Rejects EU Arctic Strategy Labeling Region a Front Line

China criticized the European Union's new Arctic strategy after EU officials described the region as a front line in global power competition.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China defended its activities in the Arctic following the release of a revised European Union Arctic strategy. The EU's new policy places security at its core, identifying China's increasing regional presence and its cooperation with Russia as primary security concerns.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas characterized the Arctic as a "front line" in global power competition, citing the expanding "footprint and ambition" of Russia and China. She stated that the revised strategy reflects this geopolitical reality.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning asserted that China's activities align with international law and are intended to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development. Mao Ning criticized the EU's approach, arguing that dividing countries into blocs based on a "Cold-War mentality" and inciting geopolitical confrontation do not serve the interests of the region.
