Global Container Freight Rates Surge 130 Percent
Jefferies reports global container freight rates rose 130 percent since February 2026 due to tensions in West Asia.
Global container freight rates increased by 130 percent between February and October 2026, climbing from approximately USD 2,000-2,500 to USD 4,000-4,500. A report by Jefferies attributes this surge to renewed tensions in West Asia, reversing a period of price declines that began in early 2025.
Despite the rising costs, India's container-based export-import trade grew 23 percent year-on-year in September 2026. This growth was driven largely by a 48 percent increase in exports to the United States, although exports to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates fell by 12-15 percent.
Jefferies identifies the potential return of shipping lines to the Suez Canal as a critical factor that could influence future global freight rates.
