Aldi UK Expands Surplus Food Scheme for Christmas
Aldi UK is urging charities in Yorkshire and Cheshire to join its surplus food scheme to help distribute excess meals during the festive season.
Aldi UK is calling on charities and community groups in Yorkshire and Cheshire to join its surplus food donation scheme ahead of the Christmas season. Operating in partnership with the community giving platform Neighbourly, the initiative matches local stores with organizations to redistribute excess food to those in need.
The partnership has donated more than 15 million meals so far this year. Company leaders expect an increase in available donations due to planned store closures on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. In addition to the surplus scheme, the retailer maintains year-round community donation points in all stores for customers to contribute household essentials and food.
National Sustainability Director Luke Emery stated that local charities and food banks are working harder than ever to support their areas, and the company wants to ensure food reaches those who need it most. Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth added that the platform helps connect local good causes with nearby stores to facilitate these donations during the winter months.
