Poundland Faces Insolvency as Gordon Brothers Evaluates Breakup Bids

Gordon Brothers is considering breaking up Poundland and selling viable parts to retail rivals after rejecting a preferred bid from Martin Property Group.

Discount retailer Poundland may enter insolvency within days as its owner, Gordon Brothers, evaluates whether to sell the entire chain or break it up into viable segments. The firm, which acquired the retailer last year for £1, is reportedly leaning away from a main solvent takeover offer, increasing the likelihood of a collapse.

While Poundland management previously identified Irish real estate firm Martin Property Group as the preferred bidder, Gordon Brothers rejected the offer, which was reportedly underfunded and reliant on deferred payments. This decision has sparked a dispute between the owner and the board of directors, with three directors appointed on October 15 expected to resign.

Gordon Brothers is now considering offers for significant parts of the business from retail rivals, including CDS Superstores (owner of Wilko and The Range), Fortress (owner of Poundstretcher), and Modella (owner of TG Jones). The potential insolvency threatens approximately 600 stores across the United Kingdom and 12,000 employees.

Trade union Usdaw has criticized the process, accusing Gordon Brothers of failing to engage with the union to secure the future of the workforce. The retailer is headquartered in Walsall and maintains a significant presence in regions such as Essex, where 15 stores are at risk.
