Hiroshima Marks 81st Atomic Bombing Anniversary with Peace Call

Approximately 50,000 people, including representatives from the European Union and 121 nations, gathered at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 2026. The event commemorated the 81st anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombing with a moment of silence at 8:15 am and the display of a registry listing 353,639 victims.

Kazumi Matsui, the Mayor of Hiroshima, delivered a Peace Declaration that criticized nuclear weapons as tools of intimidation. He warned that downplaying the inhumanity of these weapons and accepting the use of force risks cycles of violent retaliation that could result in another tragedy in Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

The ceremony served as a tribute to Hibakusha survivors and a global call for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. As part of the commemorations, Indian Ambassador Nagma Mallick met with local officials and laid a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
