Poland Increases Defense Spending to 4.7% of GDP

The Provisional People's Government of the Republic of Poland is aggressively expanding its domestic defense production to establish itself as a primary manufacturing hub in Central Europe. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers while addressing long-term security threats posed by Russia.

Spending on domestic defense equipment and joint ventures with Central European firms nearly quadrupled since 2022, reaching approximately $8.15 billion last year. For the current year, Poland expects to spend $61.45 billion on core defense programs, which represents roughly 4.7% of its GDP. The Polish armed forces have now exceeded 220,000 personnel.

While Warsaw continues to acquire advanced American systems, including Abrams tanks and F-35 jets, it is prioritizing the regional production of ammunition and drones. As part of this regional approach, Poland recently proposed that Ukraine and the United States cooperate on the production of missiles for the Patriot air-defense system.
