Japanese Companies Compensate Users After Global PHP Cyberattacks

Japanese firms GMO Internet and Park24 are paying customers following data breaches linked to global PHP vulnerabilities as the government launches AI-driven cyber defenses.

Several Japanese companies are providing financial compensation to users following a wave of cyberattacks that disrupted internet services and compromised personal data. These breaches occurred alongside a global surge in hacking attempts triggered by critical vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, which also took government and corporate websites offline across Europe.

GMO Internet, a foreign exchange trading service provider, announced it will pay customers for losses resulting from unauthorized access to its systems. The company is providing a 5,000 yen payment to all customers as an initial gesture of good faith. GMO Internet is coordinating with police and has refused to pay ransom demands made by the attackers.

Similarly, Park24 is paying 3,000 yen to customers after a personal data breach affected its Times car-sharing service. These incidents have raised concerns regarding economic stability and systemic technological weaknesses within the region.

In response to these threats, the Government of Japan announced the creation of a specialized team on Friday. This team will utilize artificial intelligence to simulate cyberattacks, allowing the state to identify and address vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by hackers.
