Air China Launches C919 First International Route to Mongolia

Air China will launch the first regularly scheduled international passenger service for the domestically developed C919 jet on August 12, 2026. The airline will operate one daily round-trip flight connecting Beijing Capital International Airport and Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Flight CA723 is scheduled to depart Beijing at 3:00 p.m., while the return flight CA724 departs Ulaanbaatar at 6:30 p.m.

Manufactured by the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, the C919 has previously operated within mainland China and on regional routes to Hong Kong, including services launched by China Eastern Airlines in January 2025. This expansion into the international market serves as a strategic step to validate cross-border operations, customs procedures, and overseas maintenance support.

Analysts describe the Ulaanbaatar route as a low-risk environment to accumulate operational data and build a replicable model for future expansion into Central and Southeast Asian markets. However, entering European and U.S. markets remains a larger challenge, as the aircraft requires further airworthiness certifications from agencies such as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the Federal Aviation Administration.
