Beau Bayh Leads Indiana Secretary of State Race in New Poll
Democrat Beau Bayh holds a significant lead over Republican Max Engling as Indiana Democrats leverage opposition to data center subsidies in statewide and House races.
A poll commissioned by Free Press Indiana shows Democrat Beau Bayh leading Republican Max Engling 43% to 35% in the race for Indiana Secretary of State. The survey, conducted by Bellwether Research, highlights a substantial advantage for Bayh in name recognition and favorability, while 48% of respondents reported they had never heard of Engling. This result contrasts with a late September poll from Hoosier Leadership for America, which placed the candidates in a statistical tie.
Bayh, a former Marine captain, has centered his campaign on government corruption and the regulation of data centers. Engling, a former staffer for Senator Jim Banks, has criticized Bayh's East Coast upbringing and professional resume. Bayh has responded by emphasizing his military leadership and questioning Engling's background as a congressional aide.
Simultaneously, Indiana Democrats are using public opposition to large-scale data center projects to challenge the Republican supermajority in the Indiana House. In targeted districts, candidates like Tiffany Stoner and Ryan Kominakis are campaigning against tax exemptions and subsidies for these projects, claiming Republicans sold out the state. This strategy follows a Free Press Indiana poll indicating 69% of likely voters oppose new data center construction. Republicans, including House utilities committee chair Ed Soliday, argue that local governments maintain final authority over construction and that Democrats are distorting legislative records for political gain.
