UN Adopts Syrian Resolution Honoring Women Searching for Missing

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a Syrian-sponsored resolution designating December 19 as the International Day of Women Searching for the Missing. The initiative aims to honor mothers, wives, and sisters seeking the fate of loved ones lost to conflict, war, and enforced disappearances, while encouraging member states to prevent violence and discrimination against these women.

This action marks the first resolution submitted by the Government of Syria to the General Assembly since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024. Ibrahim Olabi, Syria's Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the move signals a transition from a dark era of denial to one of transparency and international mobilization.

In coordination with this international effort, the National Commission for Missing Persons launched the Athar program on August 30. The initiative consists of a website and mobile application that allows families to register information and report missing relatives.
