Tamil Nadu Budget Faces Backlash From Industrial Bodies

The Government of Tamil Nadu presented its 2026-27 Budget with a strategic goal to transform the state into a $1.5-trillion economy by 2036. While the administration secured welcome reactions for power infrastructure investments, including ₹4,000 crore for the Coimbatore–Ariyalur transmission corridor, the overall response from industry bodies in Erode and Coimbatore has been mixed to negative.

MSME associations and industry federations expressed significant disappointment over the failure to reduce electricity fixed and demand charges. The Tamilnadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises and the Recycle Textile Federation highlighted the lack of solar network charge waivers and the absence of dedicated industrial estates for micro enterprises as critical omissions.

In Erode, business leaders praised the removal of eligibility criteria in government tenders to aid small businesses. However, the Federation of All Trade and Industry Associations of Erode District criticized the budget for lacking allocations for cold storage and environmental protection. Additionally, residents noted that the budget omitted several election promises, specifically the provision of six free LPG cylinders and increased monthly assistance for women.
