As the largest producer of its kind in Italy, the plant serves as a primary supplier for Leonardo/Oto Melara naval guns. Local residents reported a loud boom and the triggering of alarms immediately following the incident. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion, the extent of the damage, or whether the event resulted from sabotage or hostile action.
