Explosion Hits KNDS Ammo Italy Munitions Plant Near Rome

A massive explosion occurred on August 13, 2026, at the KNDS Ammo Italy munitions plant in the Quarto Chilometro area, situated between Colleferro and Artena near Rome. The blast originated in the facility's powder pressing department, which is responsible for producing solid fuels for aerospace launch vehicles and medium- and large-caliber ammunition for land and naval defense.

As the largest producer of its kind in Italy, the plant serves as a primary supplier for Leonardo/Oto Melara naval guns. Local residents reported a loud boom and the triggering of alarms immediately following the incident. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion, the extent of the damage, or whether the event resulted from sabotage or hostile action.

The incident may lead to significant disruptions in the supply of 155mm artillery shells, naval rounds used for missile defense, and specialized anti-air and anti-drone ammunition.
