Michigan Prepares for August 4 Primary Election

The Government of Michigan is overseeing the August 4 primary election, with early voting having begun on July 25. State data as of July 28 shows 832,435 ballots have been cast, representing an 11.3% turnout of active registered voters. Mail ballot requests have risen 58.8% compared to 2022, and early in-person turnout has increased 78% compared to the first weekend of the August 2024 primary.

At the local level, City of Alpena Clerk Anna Soik is urging residents to return absentee ballots promptly. As of July 29, Alpena had issued 1,556 absentee ballots and received 792 back, while early voting across Alpena County remained light with 50 total voters. Soik warned voters against cross voting, which occurs when candidates from multiple parties are selected and results in the invalidation of those contests.

Eligible citizens, including 16-year-olds, may register to vote online, by mail, or in person. Those registering within 14 days of the election must provide proof of residency. Early in-person voting concludes August 2, and mail ballots must be received by clerks by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 4.
