Italy Meets Only 15% of 2030 Energy Targets
The ECCO think tank reports Italy has met only 15% of its 2030 energy transition goals amid rising emissions and slow renewable capacity growth.
The ECCO climate change think tank reported Monday that Italy has achieved only 15% of its energy transition targets for 2030. According to the organization's annual monitoring report, Italy installed approximately 7 gigawatts of new renewable capacity last year, failing to reach the 10 GW annual requirement. The report attributes this shortfall to slow permitting processes and grid connection queues.
Environmental progress has regressed as greenhouse gas emissions rose by roughly 9 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2025. To meet European Union targets, Italy must now reduce emissions by approximately 95 million tons, representing 25% of total national emissions.
The report also highlights significant gaps in transportation and infrastructure. Italy currently has 445,000 electric vehicles on the road, far below the 2030 goal of 4.3 million. Additional delays were identified in the electrification of energy consumption and green transition targets for buildings and industry. The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security did not respond to requests for comment regarding the findings.
