Pentagon Reports Iran War Costs Rose to $29 Billion

Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III told Congress the cost of the war with Iran has reached $29 billion amid accusations of underreporting.

Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III testified before House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Tuesday that the cost of the war with Iran has increased to approximately $29 billion. This figure represents a $4 billion rise from the previous month's estimate. Hurst attributed the increase to refined estimates for the repair and replacement of equipment, though he noted that costs associated with repairing Iranian attacks on U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf are not yet included in the total.

Despite the official figure, internal estimates cited by U.S. officials suggest the actual cost may exceed $100 billion, more than triple the reported amount. This discrepancy occurred while the Trump administration maintains that a ceasefire established on April 7 remains in effect.

Democratic lawmakers criticized the transparency of the spending and the administration's $1.5 trillion budget request for fiscal year 2027. Senator Patty Murray described the reported costs as suspiciously low and the budget increase as absurd. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the expenditures by questioning the potential cost of allowing Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.
